Accommodation is one of the basic needs of students in college. A lot of my friends begin to find an apartment for next year recently, but there still have some students who want to live in dormitory. Should a student live in the dormitory of school or in an apartment? I think it's depend on the student's own preference.
A student living in an apartment may have the reason that he can share his room with other students who would reduce his burden of paying the rent. While living in a dormitory one cannot have this type of advantage. On the other hand, a student who prefer to live in a dormitory may thinks that they do not have to spend their time on cooking so that they can spend more time on studying.
Dormitories always located on campus and living on campus makes it easier to get oriented to the way things going on. You can get the whole university experience. Plus, you have more chance to interact and to develop friendship with other students. This includes not only with your roommates, but also everyone in your dormitory. The older students in the dormitory can be of a good help to the freshmen.Living in the dormitory also makes a student feel more like a member of the university community. There are more opportunities of becoming involved in university activities and networking offered to students who lived in dormitory.
Apartment have quietly different surroundings. Students usually have fewer neighbours and roommates so that they have less distraction. Thus, students can concentrate better on their homework and reading. Moreover, finding an apartment, making a leases and associating with the landlord are all good preparation for life after graduation. This kind of practise helps students become into adulthood.
Living in apartment also gives students freedom. You do not have to adjust your eating and sleeping habits regarding to your roommates. Living in an apartment you can bring your friends to your room while in dormitory you must consider your roommates.
In conclusion, I think it's better to live in dormitory for freshmen so that they can make friends with each other and get helps from older students. When you are in sophomore year or higher, you also can find an apartment near the school.
So, I am satisfy with the arrangement that U of I make.

Yeah, I sort of agree with the idea that every freshman lives in a dorm. However, you need to pay relatively expensive money for living in a dorm, and you can neither cook nor throw a party in dorm. I would say living in an apartment would be better once you're used to studying and living here, probably in a year or in a semester. Then, you can save a lot of money, and can meet new neighbors/friends/roommates as well. :D
